Lord willing, this coming Sunday Morning we will continue to look at Ephesians. The sermon will come from Ephesians 2:1-10. In this passage, Paul explains how God's "incomparable great power" that raised Christ from the dead, that seated him at God's right hand as ruler of all, and that placed him as head over the church, has been worked out "for us who believe" (see Eph. 1:19-23). Possible title, "Dead Men Don't Choose to Wear Plaid: How the Father Raised Us to Life through Christ the Son."
Sunday Evening we will be moving our services to participate in the Gasper River Association of Baptists' annual Thanksgiving service. The service will be at the Butler County High School at 5:00 P.M. Eric Allen will bring the message and there will be special music from the Gasper River Association of Baptists' Choir.

Sermon Preview 3-22-09
Morning: We continue looking at the seven sayings of the cross. This message will center around John 19:28, where Jesus says, "I am thirsty." John tells us that this expression is more than a cry for something to drink. We will seek to answer the questions: Why does Jesus say he is thirsty? and What does it mean?
Evening: We will continue our evangelism training with more modeling.

Morning: For the next couple of Sunday mornings my good friend, Bro. Eric Martin, will be preaching. Please keep him and his family in prayer as he prepares for this task.
Evening: During my absence we won't be having discipleship training classes on Sunday nights so that the choir can have extra time to practice the cantata.
Wednesday: One of our deacons, Tony Wilson, will be filling in for me on December 17th. Tony does a wonderful job and I am grateful for his assistance. December 24th is our Christmas Eve service (I hope to be back).

Sermon Preview 12-07-08
Special Note: Due to the fact that Delia and I are still not certain if we will be in town this coming Sunday I am torn as to what to do about this preview. Please pray that God would grant me the wisdom to know if I am going to speak this Sunday, and if so, what I should preach on.
Morning: We will have the "Hanging of the Greens" ceremony as well as our annual holiday meal. The sermon is pending.
Evening: I am still not quite sure what this service will look like.
Thank you for your prayers and patience.

Sermon Preview 11-30-08
Special Note: Since the 30th is a 5th Sunday there will be donuts and coffee in the basement at 9:30 am. Everyone is welcome.
Morning: Lord willing, we will conclude the sermon series, Jesus Our Great High Priest. This sermon is entitled, "Nothing but the Blood" and comes from Hebrews 9:1-10:18. The main idea of the the passage is, "By one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy" (Heb 10:14).
One of my favorite hymns asks:
What can wash away my sins? (Nothing but the blood of Jesus)
What can make me whole again? (Nothing but the blood of Jesus)
This passage expresses this truth through an elaborate discussion of the tabernacle and the sacrificial system. The author tells us that the tabernacle pointed to the coming of a greater sacrifice that could cleanse the conscience, not just make one ceremonially clean. He tells us that Christ had to die to cleanse us, because "without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness" (Heb. 9:22). And he also demonstrates that Jesus willingly shed his blood on our behalf.
I. The division of the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place points to the reality that the sacrifices were not sufficient to cleanse the conscience (9:1-10).
Hebrews 9:9 states, "This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper."
II. The Law decrees that blood must be shed in order for sins to be remitted (9:11-28).
Hebrews 9:22 states, "In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness."
III. It was for this purpose that Jesus willingly entered our world (10:1-18).
Hebrews 10:9-10 states, "Then he said, ‘Here I am, I have come to do your will.’ . . . And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."
This passage compels us to cling to Christ alone as our righteousness. It calls us as believers to worship the Lord for his gracious gift. It calls us to walk in confident faith, knowing that Christ has perfected us in righteousness. It compels the unbeliever to turn to Christ and find forgiveness.
Evening: We will look at giving thanks.

Sermon Preview 11-23-08
Morning: We will continue looking at Jesus Our Great High Priest. This sermon, entitled, "The Nature of His Priesthood," will look at Hebrews 7:1-8:13. In this length passage the author explains what it means for Jesus to be a priest in the order of Melchizedek. He invites us to remember that we have a high priest who has sat down at the right hand of the throne of Majesty in heaven (Heb 8:1-2). Jesus' place secures our own before God. In this passage the author will lay out some parallels between Melchizedek and Jesus, explain why God promised this new priesthood, and explain the superiority of Jesus' ministry as our Great High Priest.
Evening: We will not have discipleship training this evening. We will be showing The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything movie (VeggieTales). Everyone is welcome. The movie will start at 5:00 and there will be snacks to follow.

Sermon Preview 11-16-08
Morning: We continue looking at Jesus Our Great High Priest. After prodding us toward maturity and following the examples of those who inherit the promises (Heb. 5:11-6:12) the author now shifts his attention back to Jesus' ministry as a priest. The sermon is entitled "Behind the Curtain" and focuses on Hebrews 6:13-20. In this passage the author stresses the surety of the promises of God.
Evening: We will be looking at the doctrine of man with particular focus on the extent of the fall.

Sunday Morning (11-2-08): We are still looking at Jesus' ministry as the Great High Priest. This sermon will address the heart of the writer's audience. Entitled, "Before We Move On, Pt. 1" the sermon will come from Hebrews 5:11-6:3. Before he gets to deep into explaining Christ's priesthood, the author must back up and address some problems.
Sunday Evening: We will conclude our Membership Matters course by looking at some practical tools for growing in Christ.
Wednesday (11-5-08): Mostly likely we will be in chapter 3 of What is a Healthy Church Member? Chapter 3 deals with being gospel saturated.

Sunday Morning (10-26-08): This morning we will begin a series called Jesus our Great High Priest from Hebrews 4:14-10:18. The first sermon in this series is entitled "Before the Throne of God Above," and will come from Hebrews 4:14-5:10. The author of Hebrews has demonstrated in 1:1-4:13 that Jesus is supreme over all things. Now he turns his readers attention to the greatness of Jesus' priestly ministry. This passage reminds me of the Charitie L. Bancroft hymn, "Before the Throne of God Above." The hymn states:
Sunday Evening: We will continue our Membership Matters study. Tonight we will take a brief look at Church history with a special focus on Southern Baptists and Monticello.
Wednesday Evening (10:29-08): We will look at "A Biblical Understanding of the Good News" from chapter 7 of What is a Healthy Church? (pgs. 75-79).
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.
When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free.
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.
Behold Him there the risen Lamb,
My perfect spotless righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace,
One in Himself I cannot die.
My soul is purchased by His blood,
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ my Savior and my God!

Sermon Preview Sept. 14th-24th
Sunday Night (Sept. 14 @6) We will have a Q and A discussion of discipleship and how we accomplish the Great Commission.
Wednesday Night (Sept. 17 @ 7). We will finish our look at doctrine of the perseverance of the saints (eternal security). Do you have questions that you want answered? Let me know through the "comments" link, by email, or you can call me.
Sunday morning (Sept. 21 @ 11) we will look at Hebrews 1:3b-14. We will focus on Jesus' superiority to the created beings known as angels. This sermon will remind us that while the angels are servants of God, Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus has a unique name and place. In our day and age where we talk about "spirituality" frequently, we must be careful to ground ourselves in biblical truth. Not all "spirituality" is Christian nor is it all conducive to spiritual growth.
Sunday Night (Sept. 21 @ 6) If we offered a class for people who were new to Monticello (and Christianity) what would that class look like? If I could go back and start over what would I change? For a few weeks we will be looking at Monticello's doctrine, covenant, vision/purpose, expectations, etc.
Wednesday (Sept. 24 @ 7): We will begin our study on What is a Health Church? and What is a Healthy Church member. I hope you have been studying. I am really looking forward to it.
